In
1988, the congregation of Christ
Episcopal Church in North Flint
made a difficult decision.
A deteriorating neighborhood had
caused membership to decline.
However, its members did not
want to leave another boarded up
building-and they knew the
neighborhood’s needs were
increasing.
With low reading
levels in a neighborhood school,
high crime, substance abuse and
large numbers of single parent
families on welfare, the need
for an inter-generational
literacy program, as well as
recreational activities, was
blaringly evident.
From this need, a thoughtful
plan to close the church and
convert the building into an
outreach center was developed.
With
an administrative agreement with
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the
support of community volunteers
and partners, and funding from
various churches, foundations,
businesses and individuals,
Christ Enrichment Center (CEC)
became a reality.
